Wadi Mujib at its highest point is 900 metres above sea level; it empties into the Dead Sea at 400 metres below sea level. In Biblical times it was referred to as “Arnon Gorge” or “Arnon River” (Numbers 21: 24; Judges 11: 18), and formed a natural boundary separating the Amorites in the north from the Moabites in the south. Called the Grand Canyon of Jordan, Wadi Mujib covers an area of 220km2 and is home to a huge variety of flora and fauna, making it a favorite destination for eco and adventure seeking tourists.
The remoteness of some areas provides safe havens for rare species of cats and goats.
Wadi Mujib offers the adventure seeker excellent hiking and canyoning trails. Unfortunately due to the possibility of flash flooding during the winter months, access to most trails is only allowed from 1st March to 31st October each year. Anyone wishing to undertake one of the water trails must be able to swim and not be afraid of heights or water.
