Places to See - Neolithic Village

Close to Little Petra is a Neolithic Village (Bayda), occupied from 7,200 - 6,500 BC, and one of the oldest settlements in Jordan. The villagers built a retaining wall around the village, and constructed round houses with floors sunk below ground level. Recently a US archaeological team built replicas of the houses and these are located close to the entrance gate. On the fertile plains, the villagers grew barley and emmer, grazed herds of goats and supplemented their diet by hunting wild animals. It appears that the deceased were interred away from the village as no burial sites have been identified on site.
