Places to See - Mount Nebo

Mt Nebo is where God permitted Prophet Moses a glimpse of the Promised Land before he died. Although Moses is believed to be buried nearby, his tomb has never been located.

Mt Nebo because a place of Pilgrimage for early Christians and in the latter half of the 4th Century, a Byzantine Church and Monastery were built to commemorate Moses' death. Inside are remnants of magnificent mosaic floors depicting animals; below the floors are six tombs.

Mt Nebo is one of the most revered holy sites in Jordan. According to the Bible it is the place where Moses was buried by God: "And Moses went up from the plans of Moab to Mt Nebo, the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho. And The Lord showed him all the land..." From the lookout you can look across to the Holy Lands - Jericho and the Jerusalem Mountains. Near to the lookout is the Brazen Serpent Cross, a symbolic representation of the serpent Moses created in the wilderness and the cross upon which Jesus was crucified.
